Driver Education

Our driver education program focuses on safe driving attitudes, skill development and appropriate responses to hazards. We follow the Virginia Driver Education Standards of Learning.

Behind-the-wheel is regulated by the Virginia Department of Education and follows high quality standards and principles. All CCPS instructors proudly uphold the VDOE policies and guidelines set forth to ensure quality education behind the wheel of a car.

Learner's Permit Test

We are pleased to announce that students can take the Virginia DMV learner’s permit test at school. Students will be eligible to test if they are 15 years, 6 months or older.    

STEPS TO COMPLETE THE PROCESS: 

  • Register for the test (Internet Explorer 9 or higher or Safari).
  • Provide a parent email to receive registration confirmation, test results, notification of changes to the date and time or cancellation of the test event.
  • Before taking the two part knowledge test, study the Driver’s Manual and take the practice tests.  
  • Schools cannot provide read aloud accommodations. For read aloud accommodations students must schedule an appointment with DMV.

ON THE TEST DATE PLEASE BRING WITH YOU:

  • You will need to PRINT and have a parent/guardian SIGN the DTS 41 parent consent form.  Your child will not be able to test without this form signed by a parent/guardian.
  • Picture ID (School ID)
  • Charged Chromebook and/or charger
  • Headphones are optional for audio testing
  • The student will be issued a test receipt after passing the learner’s permit test
  • The student will need to take the test receipt and required documentation to the DMV

AT THE DMV CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER:

  • Provide DMV approved documents to prove residency and identity.
  • Pass a vision test and have their picture taken.
  • Pay the fee for the learner’s permit and driver’s license.

Behind-the-Wheel

You must have completed the classroom Driver’s Education course including the 90 Minute Parent/Teen program. Current 10th graders enrolled in driver education class may sign up if the student has an A or B average at the end of the first nine week grading period. Keep in mind, current 10th graders will not complete the classroom driver education class, until the end of the first semester.

The final step of the licensing process is behind-the-wheel. 

  • It is separate from the driver education course and is taken before or after school with a certified instructor.
  • Behind-the-wheel is 7 days long and is on weekdays and some Saturdays. 
  • Services are provided year round.
