Prekindergarten

Prekindergarten students interact with responsive adults and peers in language and print-rich environments with varied and frequent language experiences:

  • listening and telling stories

  • reading aloud frequently throughout the school day

  • rereading familiar texts

  • writing 

Students are able to make connections and interact with the world around them by developing listening and speaking skills, phonological awareness, letter knowledge and print awareness, comprehension, vocabulary, word knowledge and writing skills for ongoing academic success.

Children construct mathematical ideas based on experiences with their environment, interactions with adults and other children and daily observations. Children approach problem-solving tasks with curiosity and a sense of experimentation. Instruction encourages children’s thinking and nurtures their explorations and ideas through concepts of number, pattern, measurement, shape, space and classification.

Natural curiosity provides the basis for understanding and using science processes and practices. Students study patterns of weather, changes when substances are combined and plant growth as they are introduced to the concept of change. The significance of natural resources and conservation is also introduced.

 

Pre-K students interact with their surroundings to help with understanding of history, geography, civics and economics.

 

Children learn about their environment through touch and manipulation. Gross and fine motor activities are an integral part of the curriculum and are provided through outdoor and indoor opportunities. Students take an active role in developing healthy habits by learning to follow basic safety rules, differentiating between safe and unsafe situations, identifying feelings, cooperating with others and taking care of personal hygiene tasks.

Children learn about themselves and others in a supportive environment that provides an important foundation for executive function skills and personal and social growth. Social experiences help personal and social development through mastery involving cognition, language, emotions and perception. Students learn how to interact with others in social situations both verbally and nonverbally.
