The Chesterfield County Mathematics and Science High School at Clover Hill was founded in September 1994.  For over 25 years it has served the students of Chesterfield County in developing their critical and analytical thinking skills.  Founded as the Renaissance Program, this program has worked to give students a balanced education through an enriched Liberal Arts curriculum.

What is Math/Sci?

It is a magnet school for high ability learners.  Since 1994 we have provided a curriculum that is challenging, meaningful, and relevant to thousands of successful students.  Our graduates have become leaders in every field including medicine, performance, law, engineering, art, business, and architecture.  We do not only specialize in math and science, we also specialize in Critical Thinking and problem solving. 

We develop skills and tools that are essential to success in any college major and career.  Constructing a deep understanding of English, science, math, and social studies, they discover connections between disciplines and develop a broader appreciation and applicable grasp of the natural world and the human experience.  From here our students confidently achieve their goals.

National Consortium of STEM Schools – NCSS

We are a member of NCSSS, the National Consortium of Secondary STEM Schools.   The National Consortium of Secondary STEM Schools (NCSSS) was established in 1988 to provide a forum for specialized secondary schools focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines to exchange information and program ideas.

Program Tenets

Course Sequencing

At the Math and Science High School our curriculum is constructed to enhanced the skills in self-directed learning, problem solving and critical thinking.  It is designed to immerse the students into the subjects they study through their “core” courses.  The teachers here design their classes with a special goal in mind, getting you to think well within their content area.  Our history teachers want you to think like a historian and our science teachers want you to think like a scientist, so that is the reason why our students conduct three years of research across multiple disciplines to have that real-world applicable experience.

Our curriculum is constantly evolving to reflect best practices in education.  As a program, we are the first school approved to be an AP Capstone Diploma high school in Chesterfield County.  In addition to complementing our course sequencing, the addition of AP Seminar and AP Research will give our students an additional robust experience in cross-curricular research, project management, and an independent study.

Admissions

Thank you for your interest in The Math & Science High School.  Chesterfield County Public Schools uses an online application System.  Starting in October, families will have the ability to create an account to submit an application to the Math/Sci Specialty Center using CCPS Opportunities.  Along with your transcripts and recommendations being completed through this system, CCPS will also distribute acceptance and wait-list notifications

Specialty Center Fairs:

When completing your application be sure to:

  • Include all of your activities and interests.
  • Ask a current math or science teacher (8th grade) for a recommendation.
  • Ask a second “core” (English, math, science, & history, including a high school level foreign language) teacher, 8th grade, for a recommendation.
  • Complete the Math/Sci Assessment in January.  More details to follow.
  • Communicate with the Math/Sci Office if you have any questions.

A local admissions committee will consider the following criteria in making admissions decisions:

  • Proper math placement entering the program.
    • Must have completed Algebra I (before the start of the 2027-2028 school year)
  • Middle School Transcripts.
    • Grades and Rigor.
  • Complete Math/Sci Placement Assessments.
  • Strong application, demonstrating leadership, community service, participation in activities, awards and other interests.
  • A confidential recommendation from a current math or science teacher (8th grade).
    • Please list the course title:  ex. Algebra I and not “Math”
  • A second confidential recommendation from a middle school academic teacher (8th grade).
    • English, Math, Science, History, or World Language.
    • Please do not use the same teacher for both recommendations.

We will use standardized test scores to assess your present level of performance in reading, writing, and math.  A Math Assessment, a Critical Thinking Prompt, and Reading Comprehension Admissions Test will be administered at Clover Hill High School for applicants in January. 

  • Tentative Testing Dates for Math/Sci
    • January 9, 2027
    • January 14, 2027
    • January 20, 2027
    • Snow dates may be added at a later date
  • If you are applying from a private school or home school, the Math/Sci Office will contact you to set up testing.
  • A registration form will be sent to all applicants in December and January.
  • If you have a conflict with another center’s assessment or your schedule, please contact the Math/Sci Office to schedule from an alternate published testing date.
  • Acceptances and students eligible for the waitlist will be distributed through CCPS Opportunities in March.
  • After offers have been distributed there is an opportunity for students to return to Clover Hill to ask questions and explore our electives.
  • Wait list admissions begins following the March deadline for initial offers.  We will continue offering placement of open seats through until the start of the new school year.

  • Clover Hill High School as a whole has about ~1800 students this year.
  • The Math and Science High School has >375 students at CHHS.

The IB Diploma Programme is the best preparation available to Chesterfield County Public Schools students for their studies in college. College admissions offices accross the country (and the world) recognize the rigor of the IBDP curriculum, and recognize that graduates of the diploma programme are well prepared for success in college. Including your membership in the IBDP at Midlothian High School on your college applications helps you to stand out from other applicants.

Additionally, students can earn college credit for the IB courses taken at Midlothian High School. Students take assessments for each IB course taken and earn a score of 1-7 on those assessments. The vast majority of colleges and universities accept IB scores for college credit. Each college or university have their own policy regarding credit for IB courses, and the simplest way to find that information is to search the web for “IB Credit” and the name of the college or university.

Students in the IB Diploma Programme take the following courses during their 11th and 12th grade years. All courses are two year courses unless otherwise noted. Exponents

The Exponents is the parent organization for students who attend the Math and Science High School at Clover Hill. They serve in a supporting role working with the parents, students, and faculty to enhance the educational experience of those within the program.

The Exponents meet on the Third Monday of each month for the 2024-2025 school year. Meetings are generally held at 6:30pm at Clover Hill High School. At any time, if you have a question, please feel free to reach out to the Exponents at MathSciExponents@gmail.com.
