The mission of the CCPS Professional School Counseling Program is to empower all students to become productive and contributing members of society. In partnership with families, staff, and the community, school counselors provide a developmental program that addresses students’ academic, emotional/social and career development needs.

College & Career Center
The College and Career Center is provided as a resource to help our TD Knights determine the next step in their journey following graduation. Students are able to visit the Center to explore different colleges and other career options. Military information and SAT/ACT test dates and registration information is also available in the Career Center.
College Visits
College Admissions Representatives from various colleges will schedule visits, here, at Thomas Dale HS to meet with interested students to discuss college opportunities, requirements, etc. These sessions are for Juniors and Seniors ONLY, and students must register at least one day prior to the visit. The college sessions are an excellent opportunity for our students to speak, individually, with a college representative. If the student is unable to attend, they can stop by the Main Campus College and Career Center for more information. Visits will be scheduled during Enrichment on Wednesdays and Thursdays, NON Morning Meetings (Mondays) and during lunches.

Industry Certification (Credentialing):
To encourage more students to work toward a selected industry credential or state license while pursuing a high school diploma, the Path to Industry Certification: High School Industry Credentialing program was developed.

Individual Counseling
Individual Counseling is a one-to-one meeting with the counselor to discuss a problem or topic of interest that may be affecting their academic success. Friendship issues, worries, conflict resolution, difficulty coming to school, grief, and anger management are frequent issues facing students.
During sessions, students might:
Referrals for students to meet with a school counselor can be made by classroom teachers, principal, parents, or through student self-referrals. Parents are welcome to call or email the counselors at any time to request individual counseling for their child. While students may see us at any time for brief discussions, parental permission must be granted in order for a counselor to work with a student for a series of multiple, planned sessions.
While we provide many services for students and their families, we are unable to testify in child custody matters. We are also unable to provide intensive, long-term counseling services to students.
Group Counseling
Small group counseling (typically 6-10 participants) is needs based. Small groups provide members the opportunity to share ideas and learn from each other. Group topics are chosen based upon student needs, and can change throughout the school year. Participation, which is voluntary and confidential, requires permission from a parent or guardian. Referrals for groups are made by parents and teachers. Priority is given to students who show an academic need.

Taking an AP Class and need to register for the AP Exam? All exams must be ordered by November 1, 2025! The cost for each exam is $99. If you qualify for a fee waiver (see criteria) or are experiencing a financial hardship, please contact kevin_cook@ccpsnet.net prior to ordering your exams.
AP Exam Orders can be placed between October 1, 2025 and November 1, 2025. Online payment is accepted HERE. Simply select each AP Exam, add it to your cart, and pay via credit card. A service fee applies.
You can also pay by cash (exact change) or check, In Person, in the Main Commons during all lunches from Monday, October 27 – Friday, October 31 2025. Fee Waivers will be only accepted at this time. Any exams ordered after November 1, 2025 will incur a $40 late free. Students at West Campus can pay Mr. Keller during Monday, October 20th – Thursday 23th, 2025 (if you opt for in-person payments).
SOL Testing: The Standards of Learning (SOL) for Virginia Public Schools establish minimum expectations for what students should know and be able to do at the end of each grade or course in English, mathematics, science, history/social science, technology, the fine arts, foreign language, health/physical education and driver education.
SAT: This is an excellent resource for parents and students to use as they prepare in advance for the SATs…it includes content tips, calculator tips and frequently asked questions about changes to the Math SAT and is a MUST for students to have who are taking the new SAT.
PSAT: The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It’s a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT®. It also gives you a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools.
ACT: An independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to measurement and research for those making educational and career transitions; administrates a widely taken college admissions test.
AP Exams: The Advanced Placement (AP) program, sponsored by the College Board and administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), offers secondary school students the opportunity to participate in challenging college-level course work while still in high school. Students can receive credit, advanced placement, or both from thousands of colleges and universities that participate in the AP program. Each exam consists of multiple-choice and free-response sections. Most exams are three hours long and cover two semesters of college-level work; those that test one semester of work are generally two hours long.
W!se Testing: Instruction in economics and personal finance prepares students to function effectively as consumers, savers, investors, entrepreneurs, and active citizens. Students learn how economies and markets operate and how the United States’ economy is interconnected with the global economy. On a personal level, students learn that their own human capital (knowledge and skills) is their most valuable resource.
