Counseling

Counseling services are offered to all students both individually and in groups.  These services are designed to address the academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs of students.

Coordination:

Counselors coordinate a variety of special programs within their schools.  Here at Weaver, these include sponsoring our K-Kids student service organization, arranging special informational parent coffees, helping students transition to middle school, working with students who might need various academic services (such as gifted educational services), and coordinating a core values program to help reinforce character education lessons.

Consultation:

An important part of the school counselor’s role is consultation.  Counselors may consult with parents, faculty, other school staff, and community agencies in order to best meet the individual needs of all students.

Classroom Guidance:

Counselors conduct a variety of classroom guidance lessons throughout the year in order to provide students with information relevant to their needs or concerns.  These lessons may include problem solving skills, study skills, career exploration, decision-making skills, and future educational planning.

Classroom Guidance Lessons

Classroom guidance is a developmental program of classes designed to foster students’ academic, career, and personal/social development. Classes are preventative in nature and empower students with self-knowledge, coping strategies, and life skills that will assist them in becoming problem solvers, collaborative workers, and responsible citizens.

Small Group Counseling Services

Throughout the school year, we will be coordinating various small group counseling experiences.  These small counseling groups center around a number of different topics.  Topics include (but are not limited to) the following:  divorce or separation, sibling rivalry, anger management , behavior choices, social skills, and friendship issues.  Children are given the opportunity to talk to each other about their own personal situation and are taught strategies for handling certain common feelings.  This time together helps children process emotions while decreasing feelings of isolation.

Please contact one of us or your child’s teacher if one of the groups sounds like it would be beneficial to your child.  If parents have more specific questions about projects of activities that would take place during the group, we can be reached at school.  Keep in mind that teachers may refer students for groups, too.  Your child’s teacher or one of us will contact you if this is the case.  Groups usually meet once a week for a half an hour.  Teachers are able to select times that work with your child’s schedule.  We want to work with and for you to make sure your child receives the best possible services throughout his or her school years in Chesterfield.
