Don’t underestimate the importance of having fun participating in school activities. Some of the best times and memories students have are the experiences of belonging to a club or participating in an after school activity. Clubs and activities are important to join just for the enjoyment that they will bring to most students, but they also allow the students to more easily make friends because the groups are small and they get to be themselves!
Clubs and activities provide students with many positive experiences that help them to become well-rounded individuals who are ready for college or the workplace. It helps students to become active in their school and to feel a connection the school and to others. It provides a sense of pride and school spirit and it is a positive influence on our youth today.
Students at GHES learn to communicate and problem solve by experimenting with a variety of tools, processes and media. We use paint, pastels, paper sculpture, clay and more, to help children develop self-confidence, self-respect and have an appreciation for the world around them through art.
Bark 4 VARC (VA Readers Choice) is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in 4th grade. The purpose of this program is to encourage students to read a variety of books. The students must pass a quiz on each of the books read. At the end of the year the students who have read 8 books will take part in an ice cream celebration. While celebrating, the books will be discussed; and the student will cast a vote on their favorite book.
Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in 5th grade. The purpose is to encourage students to read high quality books and have fun while competing with peers. A student participates by reading from the book list provided for that year. Students must pass a quiz on each book they read to make the team. All students compete in a school-wide competition. 8 students will represent Grange Hall in a county-wide competition.
Students have the opportunity to learn about several different careers from volunteer presenters. K-2nd grade students experience careers on Transportation Day when an assortment of vehicles used at work are shared. 3rd-5th grade students learn about a variety of career fields from speakers who present in their classrooms.
Career Day is coordinated by the School Counseling Department
All staff and students are sorted into one of five houses. Houses are like teams, everyone will belong and everyone will have a chance to participate. Each house reflects one of our Bulldog
PRIDE values: politeness, respect, integrity, discipline, and effort. Students will have the opportunity to earn points for their house by showing their Bulldog PRIDE.
In the fall the book fair is offered to the families during the Fall Carnival/Festival. Students will also shop during their regularly scheduled library times.
Grange Hall has a very active PTA! Our PTA sponsors many exciting activities throughout the year.

Triple Bulldog Dare you is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in 3rd grade. The purpose of this program is to encourage and challenge students to read a chapter book. The students must pass a quiz on each of the books read. A Bulldog Shop opens at the end of the school year. The students may spend the points that they earned on small prizes.
Friendly helpers are selected by their peers at the end of their 3rd grade year. Students are selected based on their ability to be a positive role model for our school community. The school counseling department meets consistently with these groups to identify ways to serve as a peer mentor during 4th and 5th grade.

5th grade students will complete an application at the beginning of the year to be considered for a News Anchor position in our in-house morning news show “Bulldog News Network” . Students will be selected around September and will rotate monthly. Students will anchor the news daily and provide students and staff with important information regarding Grange Hall elementary school.
Students are selected twice a year to be Safety Patrols. These students are selected by their teachers and have consistently shown good character. These students help the staff with safe arrival and dismissal.
In the Springtime, Kindergarteners will have an opportunity to bring one of their grown-ups to music class. Students will conduct a typical music class full of singing games, instrument playing, storytelling, and dancing that will give our visitors a peek into all of the music-making fun we get into over the course of the school year!
Every year, the first grade performs a Spring Musical. For many of our students, this is their first chance to perform on a stage for a big audience. All students will learn new songs from familiar stories and some students will have an opportunity to be featured with an individual speaking or singing part. This year, our first graders are performing a dramatization of The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt.
During second grade, students learn about folk dances from cultures around the world. Each second grade class will take part in hosting “Family Folk Dancing Week” where they will have an opportunity to bring one grown-up to observe music class. We will perform several dances for our guests and hopefully teach them a dance or two!
The Veterans Day Program is one of Grange Hall’s oldest and most highly attended traditions. During this program, third graders sing a combination of traditional and contemporary tunes to honor the veterans in our community. Students may also write original poems to be selected for presentation during the program.
Each fourth grade student will spend the second semester or their school year learning how to play the recorder. Learning the recorder is not only an exciting time in the fourth grade music curriculum, but also serves as a prerequisite experience to playing a band instrument in middle school. Students must master air control, fine motor skills, and musical notation. The culmination of their hard work is a recorder presentation during the school day. During the presentation, fourth grade classes will perform for third grade students, showing off the new skills and songs they’ve learned.
The Fifth Grade Winter Program is driven by the creativity of the fifth grade students and also serves as a snapshot of the music education experience at Grange Hall. During this unforgettable evening, students will sing, play instruments, feature their original music, improvise, utilize creative movement, and bring stories to life. While preparing, students are required to take these musical skills and concepts to the next level in order to create a highly individualized, eclectic and meaningful performance.
