Don’t underestimate the importance of having fun participating in school activities. Some of the best times and memories students have are the experiences of belonging to a club or participating in an after school activity. Clubs and activities are important to join just for the enjoyment that they will bring to most students, but they also allow the students to more easily make friends because the groups are small and they get to be themselves!
Clubs and activities provide students with many positive experiences that help them to become well-rounded individuals who are ready for college or the workplace. It helps students to become active in their school and to feel a connection the school and to others. It provides a sense of pride and school spirit and it is a positive influence on our youth today.
Battle of the Books (BOB) is a book trivia competition meant to encourage recreational reading, expose students to a variety of types of literature, and increase familiarity with authors. In March, the team will compete in a Quizbowl style contest meant to test their knowledge of the year’s BOB selections. Students have until the end of January to qualify for the team by reading at least half of the selected books and passing quizzes.
Do you love to sing and perform? Then join the Chorus! This “singing club” will meet before school in the Fall then give a performance in October. All Fourth and Fifth grade students are invited to join. Information will be sent home in September.
The local Cub Scout troop leaders will visit Gordon this fall to talk to students about joining. Look for information soon!

Safety Patrol
Each morning and afternoon, our Safety Patrol assists with bus loop and indoor safety for all our students. Fifth graders are allowed the opportunity to apply for the Safety Patrol. A short essay is the student’s application for Safety Patrol consideration. Students will need to write about why they want to be a part of Gordon’s Safety Patrol. More information will be available soon!
Girl Scouts is a “girl-led” organization where girls take charge, in partnership with committed volunteers, to make decisions and discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls teaming together in a supportive, nurturing environment.
Through an amazing array of enriching experiences, girls are encouraged to express themselves freely, try new things, and experiment in various leadership roles. The process of leading, learning by doing, and collaborating develops character, strong values, social conscience, confidence in one’s potential and self-worth, as well as skills for success in the real world – qualities that will serve girls all their lives.

Today, there are 3.7 million Girl Scouts in the U.S., 2.7 million girl members and 928,000 adult members working primarily as volunteers. More than 50 million women in the U.S. today are Girl Scout alumnae. We are the largest girl-serving organization in the United States.

The Girl Scouts are open to all girls and adults who accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law and meet membership requirements.Anyone who meets or can meet membership requirements shall not be denied admission or access to the Girl Scout program because of race, color, ethnicity, creed, national origin, socioeconomic status or disability.The Girl Scout membership year is October 1 through September 30.The annual membership fee to be a member of Girl Scouts of the USA is $18. This includes accident insurance to cover participants in Girl Scout activities. Lifetime membership is also available for adults. Gordon is excited to begin a K-Kids club!
K-Kids is a student-led community service organization that operates under school regulations and draws its members from the student body, grades K-5. A Kiwanis Club in Midlothian, composed of like-minded, service-oriented people from the community, serves as the club’s sponsor. Teachers and administration will serve as the coordinators.
K-Kids club develops caring leaders. K-Kids objectives are:
To provide opportunities for working together in service to school and community.
To develop leadership potential.
To foster the development of strong moral character.
To encourage loyalty to school, community, and nation.
Students who choose to join K-Kids may serve as an officer if elected. Members of the club will vote to elect: Sergeant-at-Arms, Treasurer, Secretary, Vice President and President.
Meetings will take place once a month before school from 8:30-9:10a.m. Members are expected to attend each meeting.
If you are interested in becoming a member of K-Kids, please fill out the application that will be shared with parents.

In January each year, PTA oversees a Winter Enrichment program for students. For six weeks, students are given the opportunity to explore something new and exciting after school; such as, Clay, Chess, Cake Decorating, Juggling, Creative Writing, Mad Science, Maymont, and Fashion Design.
