Counseling

Overview

The school counseling program at Chester Early Chesterfield Learning Academy is designed to help support students’ social and emotional learning (SEL), academic and college and career readiness.  We collaborate with staff and parents to ensure students have kindergarten readiness and a positive learning environment for all students.

Mission Statement

The school counselors’ mission is to enhance students’ growth through building positive relationships with peers and adults and to prepare students to become lifelong learners and productive citizens.

What Does a School Counselor Do?

We help students regulate their emotions and learn new skills that will help them with their academic and social and emotional learning (SEL). We promote a positive environment at school and a love for learning and working with others. We connect parents to resources as needed.

Individual Counseling

Individual counseling is available to all students. This service can be requested by a parent, teacher, administrator, or student. The topics of concerns may include: friendship, anger management, grief, anxiety, family changes, self-control, coping skills.

Techniques that are often used during individual sessions are: role playing, puppetry, storytelling, goal setting, counseling related games, art work, and discussion.

Note: While we offer services for students, long-term counseling is not offered in the school counseling program.

Group Counseling

Small group counseling consists of 3-4 students, facilitated by the counselor, who need extra support in a smaller group setting. These groups serve as an opportunity for students to work with other students who are working towards the same goal. Group lessons are up to six (6) sessions total.
