International Baccalaureate is an international recognized educational organization that holds students to the highest academic standards allowing them succeed in whatever future educational or career endeavors they can aspire to.<\/p>

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP) is a broad-based academic program for 11th and 12th graders.\u00a0 Over the course of two years, students complete coursework at an advanced level in six different subject areas.\u00a0 During that two-year period, students complete specific assessments set by the International Baccalaureate Organization for each subject area. At the end of that time they sit for extensive examinations in each subject.\u00a0 As part of the program, students also participate in extra-curricular activities including community service. They also complete an independently conceived, designed, and executed research project, and take a course entitled Theory of Knowledge, which helps them to consciously define what it means to learn and to know something within the context of all their subject areas.<\/p>

Mission Statement:<\/strong> The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.<\/p>

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.<\/p>

The International Baccalaureate program is one of the most well-respected international educational organizations in the world. As a member of the IB program at Meadowbrook High School, students are held to the same standards as students from the best schools all around the world. Our students routinely go to top-ranked colleges such as UVA and Cornell. With IB, students can pursue almost any academic and career goal at the collegiate level and beyond if they are willing to put in the work.<\/p>

Participants in the IB program develop their skills in all subject areas at a level that prepares them to excel in the world\u2019s most prestigious colleges and universities.\u00a0 The curriculum is firmly based in critical thinking development and promotes the development of self-initiation and problem-solving.\u00a0 Students who achieve excellence within the IB program can expect to be rewarded by a variety of college recognition programs including:\u00a0 college scholarships, preferential admission, advanced standing upon entrance, placement out of preliminary coursework, and college credit.\u00a0 All teachers in the IB program are trained and monitored by the International Baccalaureate Organization, which certifies that their standards and expectations are upheld.<\/p>

Ninth and tenth grade students attending Midlothian and Meadowbrook\u2019s Pre-DP (IB) programs receive the benefit of completing the county and state-mandated SOL-based curriculum under the tutelage of teachers who have been trained by the International Baccalaureate Organization. Those teachers know what will be demanded of students when they enter what may very well be the world\u2019s most rigorous academic program for high school students!<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>

<\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span>What should you expect as an IB Diploma Programme Student?<\/span><\/i><\/div>

As an IB Diploma student, you will not find a curriculum that focuses on a particular subject area or field of endeavor; students must develop strong skills in math and science as well as in English, history, and a foreign language. This is a broad curriculum that allows students to choose virtually any field of academic pursuit following high school.<\/p>

The IB is a set curriculum developed, monitored, and assessed by an agency external to Chesterfield County Public Schools\u2014the International Baccalaureate Organization, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.<\/p>

IB World Schools, such as Meadowbrook and Midlothian, must undergo a lengthy authorization process and are, in effect, licensed by the IB to offer the IB Diploma Programme. That authorization is reviewed every five years in order to ensure that the school is performing to IB expectations.<\/p>

Teachers in the IB are required by the IB to be trained at an IB-approved facility.<\/p>

Much of the work completed for the IB diploma is set and scored by examiners and moderators of the International Baccalaureate Organization, which ensures that the quality of both the instruction and the students\u2019 work meets IB standards.<\/p>

Students who score highly on their internal assessments – IB teachers conduct these assessments at Meadowbrook and they are externally moderated by IB – exams, and Extended Essay and complete their CAS Requirement are awarded a diploma from the International Baccalaureate Organization in addition to the Virginia Advanced Diploma.<\/p>

Because the curriculum, instruction, and assessment are monitored by an outside agency, there is a high degree of reliability in IB Diploma results, and this reliability is recognized and rewarded by colleges and universities around the world through scholarship, placement, and credit award programs.\u200b<\/p>

<\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span>Which students do well in an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme?<\/span><\/i><\/div>

The IB is a demanding program that will serve the most advanced and gifted students well; however, although the IB is rigorous, students who wish to pursue an IB Diploma do not have to be prepared to begin the program the day they enter high school.\u00a0 This means that virtually any highly-motivated student who is willing to dedicate himself or herself to developing skills can use the years in the Pre-DP program to prepare for the actual IB in 11th and 12th grades.\u00a0 The most important characteristics of an IB applicant are: motivation; willingness, if necessary, to set schoolwork as a more important priority than employment or entertainment; the ability to organize and to manage several tasks at once; and the willingness to seek help when it is needed.\u00a0 Finally, the successful IB student must be willing and able to engage in extra-curricular activities while also managing an academically demanding program.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>

Meadowbrook offers French, Spanish, and Japanese for students Language B selection, and IB Psychology as an elective. *These courses may be pursued in either 1) summer school (in-person or online), 2) fall or spring night school available at the C-level or 3) CCPS Online (in the summer or during the school year). All summer coursework and night school requires tuition. If a studentwishes to take another elective during their Sophomore year and then enroll in Honors Economics & Personal Finance in their Free Choice as a Junior, that is also acceptable.<\/p>

**If a student enters 9th grade in Level 3 of a World Language, they must pursue Level 5 in the 11th grade. Their test results from the end of the 11th grade will determine their options for 12th grade (Level 6 or an elective). If a student enters 9th grade without a World Language credit, they must complete Levels 1-4. Students can take Japanese ab initio at the end of Japanese 2 or 3 if they find themselves struggling with the language. IB Japanese 3 and 4 will be added for the 2025-26 school year.<\/p>

<\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span>Which IB program are you zoned for? Meadowbrook or Midlothian?<\/span><\/i><\/div>

The IB program you are zoned for is determined by your high school attendance zone. Students who are zoned for Matoaca, Thomas Dale, LC Bird, Manchester, or Meadowbrook High School can apply to the Meadowbrook IB program. Students who are zoned for Monacan, James River, Clover Hill, Cosby, or Midlothian High School can apply to the IB Diploma Programme at Midlothian High School.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>

<\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span>Transportation<\/span><\/i><\/div>

Transportation to all the CCPS specialty centers is coordinated centrally and is based on a series of pick-up and drop-off points, all of which are determined by the addresses of students who commit to attend the various centers.\u00a0 Students and parents should expect that they may have to travel as far as three miles from their homes in order to reach the bus stop.\u00a0<\/p>

<\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span>Eight Graders Open House<\/span><\/i><\/div>

Eighth graders are invited to attend a Specialty Center Fair in October.\u00a0 These fairs allow students to consider the broad range of specialty programs Chesterfield County Public Schools and the surrounding area have to offer.<\/p>

Online applications are available for students and their families to complete on CCPS Opportunities.\u00a0 Students will need to get recommendations from their favorite teachers for their applications.<\/p>

Each specialty center program hosts an open house. These open houses allow students to gain a better understanding of the programs each school has to offer, and it provides an opportunity for families to get answers to any questions they may have. Our Open House is on October 16th, 2024.<\/p>

<\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span>Ninth and Tenth Grade Meadowbrook Applicants<\/span><\/i><\/div>

The IB is an 11th and 12th grade program that students can join, as long as there is space, up to the beginning of the 11th grade year.<\/p>

Students who are recommended by their teachers or are interested in the program should email austin_good@ccpsnet.net<\/a>. After a discussion, and a display of the student’s continued interest, they will be encouraged to complete a Meadowbrook IB application. In order to complete their application,\u00a0 students will need to provide teacher recommendations\u00a0 Students will be contacted for an interview and after their transcript is reviewed, students will be notified of their application status.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

If you were a part of an IB DP Program outside of Chesterfield County Public Schools, you can transfer into the IB Program at Meadowbrook High School if you are in good academic and behavioral standing and interested in continuing your IB studies.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>
