The school counseling program provides students with early interventions as well as preventative strategies to ensure that all students achieve success in school and in life.<\/p><p>A school counselor must earn a Master\u2019s Degree in school counseling and hold state certification in school counseling to include counseling theories and practices, human behavior, career education, individual appraisal, and social\/cultural issues. Maintaining certification includes on-going professional development to stay current with education reform and challenges facing today\u2019s students. Topics include skills for success, problem solving strategies, bullying prevention, career exploration, and core values.<\/p><p><strong>Small Group Counseling Responsive Services<\/strong><\/p><p>Support groups allow groups of 4-8 students to learn together in a caring and confidential setting. Groups meet for approximately 30 minutes once a week during lunch for 6 sessions. Topics include changing families, resiliency skills, peer relations, grief, assertiveness skills, and stress management.<\/p><p><strong>Individual Counseling Responsive Services<\/strong><\/p><p>Individual counseling is available at the request of the student, parent, or staff member. While students may see the school counselor at any time for brief discussions, parental permission is required prior to a series of planned sessions.<\/p><p><strong>Individual Student Planning<\/strong><\/p><p>We assist students with goal setting, self-regulation, and provide strategies and tools for academic and behavioral success.<\/p><p><strong>Consultation, Collaboration, Referrals<\/strong><\/p><p>We consult and collaborate with school personnel, parents\/guardians, and community members to ensure student success. We make referrals to community agencies and services.<\/p><p><strong>System Support and Accountability<\/strong><\/p><p>We use data to evaluate our school counseling program and rely on feedback from staff and the school counseling advisory council to hold us accountable for our program goals and student success.
