Don’t underestimate the importance of having fun participating in school activities. Some of the best times and memories students have are the experiences of belonging to a club or participating in an after school activity. Clubs and activities are important to join just for the enjoyment that they will bring to most students, but they also allow the students to more easily make friends because the groups are small and they get to be themselves!
Clubs and activities provide students with many positive experiences that help them to become well-rounded individuals who are ready for college or the workplace. It helps students to become active in their school and to feel a connection the school and to others. It provides a sense of pride and school spirit and it is a positive influence on our youth today.
Battle of the Books is a 5th grade reading program where students read as many of the 20 books from the BOB list that they can, and then participate in two competitions. In order to make the BOB Team, students must read 10 of the 20 BOB books and pass the quizzes for the 10 books by January 31, 2020.
In March, we host a book fair at Alberta Smith. In May, we give our sharks the opportunity to get books for the summer by having a buy-one-get-one book fair. We welcome parent volunteers to assist with our youngest sharks.
Our Field Day is an annual event held each May after SOL testing, giving our sharks the opportunity to have a fun filled day outside with lots of games and activities. We need many parent volunteers to make this day a success!
Our Shark House System allows us to extend beyond the classroom family, creating a school learning environment that is even more exciting, engaging and encouraging. The Houses span all ages to encourage collaborative partnering among grade levels, allowing us to build a sense of pride across the entire school. Each house has its own crest, color, value and hand symbol.
Little Feet Meets for preschool and elementary children help children reach critical developmental milestones through weekly sports training. Skill stations for preschool students, lead-up track events for students in grades K – 2 and competitive track events for students in grades 3 – 5 are offered to accommodate all ages and skill levels.

Fourth and fifth graders have the opportunity to be in our Safety Patrol program. Our Safety Patrols play an important role each morning at our school. Their presence in the car loop, bus loop, and hallways insures that our students come into the building safely. They are always there to lend a helping hand, give a friendly smile and greeting, and remind others of important safety rules.
Members are nominated by staff and are in charge of our school recycling program and assist when our school is collecting items for organizations. They make signs for school events as well.
WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) Is the father involvement initiative of the National Center for Fathering that organizes fathers and father figures in order to provide positive male role models for the students and to enhance school security. Today, more than 2,276 active programs in 41 states participate in the WATCH D.O.G.S. Program.
Who are Watch D.O.G.S.?
Fathers, grandfathers, step-fathers, uncles, and other father figures who volunteer to serve at least one day a year in a variety of school activities as assigned by the school principal or other administrator.
